Overflow of Praise 2
The worship leader counts off the beats to the first song,
the band begins to play and the congregation steps into a song of worship. As they get to the rousing chorus, “And if
our God is for us, then who could ever stop us, and if our God is with us, than
what could stand against,” it becomes apparent that there are two kinds of
people in the congregation today. Those
who are focused on the memory of God’s presence in their lives and through
their journey over the past week are lifting their voices and hearts in praise
to God, oblivious of the people around them.
Others are robotically singing the words with no expression or simply
standing, hands in their pockets, waiting for the sermon to begin because they
are disconnected from the reality of God’s presence in their lives and through
their journey over the past week.
Worship is an expression of the overflow of God in our
lives. Even in our most difficult
circumstances, He remains present, giving love, hope and grace in our time of
need. If we are connected to that
presence, we “celebrate His abundant
goodness and joyfully sing of His
righteousness (Psalm 145:7). True
worship cannot be conjured up by a good band or an exuberant worship
leader. True worship rises up in an
individual when they become overwhelmed with the overflow of God’s
goodness. It is generosity responding to
generosity. I am generous with my praise
because He has been generous with His goodness!
Psalm 145:7
“They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully
sing of your righteousness.”
