Contagious
January was
a terrible month for the flu. It came
through the area and often swept up every member of a household in its
miserable symptoms. Aching, fever,
coughing, sinus headaches… it was a miserable few weeks for many people. The problem with the flu is that it is so
contagious. Sneezes and coughs launch
germs into the air and are picked up by unsuspecting bystanders who wake up in
a few days wondering what just ran them over!
The flu is
not the only thing that is contagious.
There are, in fact, some very good things that are easily caught by
others. One of those things is
generosity. Consider this story from
everyday life about generosity:
I
work at a college where one of our commuter students lost her house in a fire.
She has three children, including a 3-year-old boy. I offered to donate my
4-year-old son’s clothes that no longer fit. After bagging up the clothes and
explaining that the clothes were going to be given to a little boy whose house
burned down, my son went and got two of his toy Matchbox cars. He put them in
the bag and said, “Now he’ll have some toys to play with too.”
Mom and dads can model generosity to
their children but children can also model generosity and help us adults
realize what is really important.
Consider how your family’s generosity goal is impacting those around you
who are observing it! Let’s hope it spreads
like the flu!
Matthew 5:16
“Let your light
shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in
heaven.”
